METALLURGY FOR NON-METALLURGISTS

OVERVIEW

This 1-day course is designed for engineers, geologists, project managers, technologists, suppliers to the resource industry, accountants, administration staff, mineral sector investors, marketers, financial advisors, and those either dealing with mineral processing (extractive metallurgy) or wanting a better understanding of the principles of extractive metallurgy. This course will help you in wrapping your head around the technical “Mumbo-Jambo” of mineral processing for personal or work benefits. Participants will obtain an understanding of the critical steps in typical flowsheets, including the economic and technical drivers that need to be considered in plant design and operation.

PROGRAM

Course Outcomes

Participants will be introduced to the basic elements of the theory and practices of metallurgy to get an overview of metallurgical principles in the design and operation of a plant. Topics include the science of metallurgy from a non metallurgist’s point of view, principles of mineralogy and chemistry, and processes to extract metal from various rocks and minerals.

PRE-REQUISITES:

In order to fully realize the objectives of this course, attendees would at least have a reasonable understanding of basic data manipulation and graphical display tools and techniques commonly used in MS Excel environment. A basic grasp of mining and mineral industry terminology would be great but not essential.
