Geological/GIS Data Management

Consolidated Tin Mines is a base metal concentrate producer operating the Mount Garnet, Dry River South and Balcooma polymetallic underground mines located in Far North Queensland of Australia. The objectives of this project were to establish sound and internationally acceptable geological data/database generation and management protocols and to set up a relational/GIS database for the exploration/mining geology and resource development functions of the entire operation. A major deliverable of the project was to produce a practical and effective procedure for managing geological processes to ensure timely availability of quality geological data suitable for JORC compliant resource/reserve estimation.

Key deliverables of this project included:
• Revision of existing database management systems, proposal, and implementation of appropriate off-the-shelf computer software system for geology database management.
• Data compilation, validation, and migration from various sources into the newly implemented database.
• Reviewing, developing, and implementing standardized Quality Control procedures for geology data generation and processing (JORC Code compliant), ensuring there exist a clear audit trail of documentation.
• Establishing and implementing a clear auditable chain of custody procedures for all geology data from generation to storage and retrieval.
• Undertaking general database management functions and configurations including generation of queries for reports & validation routines to maintain the reliability of data (using MSSQL & relational SQL-based database) and ensure data security and integrity.
• Development and maintenance of geology GIS database (ArcGIS).
• SQL server management/maintenance (including ensuring regular database back-ups).
